Washington Regional Medical Center is proud to be one of the few facilities in eastern North Carolina to offer 3D mammography services. Our Norma Lorraine Avignone Women’s Health Center provides a growing range of outpatient diagnostic services focused on women, including 3D mammography using the Senographe Pristina Mammography System.
A 3D mammogram is an imaging test that combines multiple breast X-rays to create a three-dimensional picture of the breast. It can be used to look for signs of breast cancer and investigate the cause of breast problems. According to the Mayo Clinic, when used for breast cancer screening, 3D mammogram machines create 3D images as well as standard 2D mammogram images. Studies show that combining 3D mammograms with standard mammograms reduces the need for follow-up imaging, slightly increases the number of cancers detected during screening, and improves breast cancer detection in dense breast tissue. We are excited to offer this service to our residents and surrounding communities, furthering our mission to provide healthcare that heals.
